New Year’s Resolutions, and all that – I’m back exercising again. Specifically, I’m lifting weights 3 times per week, with a day or two of cardio mixed in. I also need to improve my eating habits, since the holidays are over and I’m out of excuses!
I know, I know, you’ve heard this all before. However, there is a difference this time… My son is working out with me! He’s been begging for a while now for me to let him lift weights. I had some barbells around the basement that he’s messed with before, but now it’s the real deal. Hopefully, we’ll keep each other motivated.
We’re starting slow, and mixing some free weights with some machines. We’re doing the bench press and curls using free weights, and about 6 different machines. In the future, when we get more comfortable and have more stamina, I’d like to do everything with free weights. Also, he’s just 13, and he hasn’t “matured” yet, so I’m focusing much more on his technique and muscle toning with him than I am on him gaining strength. I’d rather him learn how to lift correctly with me, and then carry that into more serious lifting for sports when he gets older and matures. Regardless, it won’t hurt either one of us. We’re warming up and stretching beforehand, and stretching aftewards, as well.
That said, I’m already a little tight and sore! I must say, though, it’s a “good” kind of sore – I actually kind of miss it when I’m not working out. I’m interested to see how he responds. I’m sure he’ll bounce back quicker than me, but he did put some work in today. We both have a long way to go, but hopefully, we’ll get there together and have fun doing it!
So far, so good. I’ll post some updates as we progress. I hope in a month or so for us to have a really good routine, and to have some significant gains to report. We’ll see – the most important thing for me right now is to stick with it.
